BANGLADESH GOVT BLOCKED ACCESS FACEBOOK

The Bangladesh government temporarily blocked access to the popular social networking website facebook from Saturday evening.

The decision came after the arrest of a youth for uploading satiric images of some leading politicians including the prime minister and leader of the opposition.

Though the government did not make any official statement in this regard, but the Telecom Regulatory Commission (BTRC) sources confirmed that the largest social networking website was blocked for hosting of some anti-religious and pornographic links by users across the globe.

"We have decided to block all access to facebook temporarily," said a high official of the BTRC.

"The decision has taken following a direction of the government high-ups," he added.

Thirty-year-old Mahbub Alam Rodin was held early Saturday for publishing some cartoons of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on the facebook.

A team of the Rab-10 detained Rodin at Ranking Street in Wari of the Old Dhaka about 12:30am.

Earlier, the government blocked the popular video sharing website YouTube for hosting a recorded conversation held among the prime minister and army officers after BDR killings.

In Bangladesh, near 9 lac people use FaceBook. 20% female and 80% male user. More than 10 lakh people are using internet service.
